Risa Jones, half-Aedh/half-werewolf, can enter the realm between life and death. She can speak to the dying and the dead, and she can see the Reapers, collectors of souls. What she can not yet see is the identity of a stranger murdering women and draining their blood. Now Risa must summon her gifts to find him, even if it means putting her own life in danger. But Risa needn’t look far. The killer knows who she is.
He tells her his victims are infected by darkness and he’s fated to destroy them. Fascinated by Risa, he engages her in a sinister game: the chance to save the life of his next victim by deciphering his series of clues. In a race against time, she enlists the help of the Reaper Azriel.
But as an attraction between them grows, so does the fear that the stranger’s motives are only part of a larger, more dangerous scheme—one that has lured Risa and Azriel into the dark.
Not reading the previous books in the Dark Angel series made it difficult for me to understand the overarching storyline and various character relationships in DARKNESS HUNTS. Luckily there was enough exposition that I didn’t feel completely lost. This book moves fast and the pace is made all the more frenetic because Risa is in a race against the clock to stop this mysterious serial killer from killing his next victim. The way she uses her ability to find and defeat him was very clever and involved a lot exciting close calls.
I admired Risa’s persistence and determination to stop the killer while being run ragged. Every time she gets one minute to calm down something else comes up making her run to the rescue. Risa is not only has to deal with being physically exhausted but also emotionally taxed with her complicated love life.
The consequences of Azriel and Risa’s growing connection to each other are discussed in detail in between the action. Sometimes relationship talk can get pretty tedious and drag the plot to a halt, but in this case the relationship dynamics were some of the best parts of the book. The previously established love triangle between Risa, Azriel, and the Aedh, Lucien became a little less complicated as Luciens redeeming qualities became less and less evident while his obvious manipulations became more prominent.
DARKNESS HUNTS is another thrilling installment in the Dark Angel series which continues to expand its unique mythology, persistent heroine, and a compelling storyline. With the cliffhanger at the end I am definitely looking forward to the next book, DARKNESS UNMASKED coming out June 4th 2013 by Signet Select.
