The ranks of tough, beautiful, and sexy heroines who battle supernatural evil have grown since the early days of Buffy the Vampire Slayer–and none are tougher than author Sable Grace’s half Vampyre-half Lychen warrior Kyana. Paranormal romance fans who regularly devour the bestselling novels of Jeaniene Frost, Pamela Palmer, and Sherrilyn Kenyon will be mesmerized by Chosen, Grace’s third breathtaking Dark Breeds adventure. This time her unstoppable avenger takes on her new role as Goddess of the Hunt, joining with Ryker–the new Zeus and Kyana’s one true love–to save the world from vampires, demons, shapeshifters, and all manner of supernatural creatures of the night, in a battle that could carry them to the fiery depths of Hades itself.
The concept of characters replacing the Greek gods was a unique one and I was excited about having Greek mythology infused into my Urban Fantasy. I couldn’t enjoy it though because the I was too busy trying to figure out what was going on. I expected a little disorientation when I started CHOSEN since this was my first book in the Dark Breed series, but I was left feeling confused and lost for almost the entire book.
I didn’t understand why the gods needed replacements if they still existed. It was also difficult to wrap my head around the numerous names as the characters were referred to by their god name and their real name interchangeably along with talking to the real gods who were still around.
The plot revolving around Cronos wanting to take down the gods and generally wreak havoc would have been a neat concept except Cronos’ motivations in this story was never explained. Everything seemed to be set up in the previous book so CHOSEN was basically just the big concluding battle and the tie up of various previously established storylines that I had no idea about.
As a newcomer to the series, I couldn’t really get into CHOSEN or care enough about its characters to root for them one way or another as the the storyline picks up directly from ASCENSION and BEDEVILED without any recap for new readers. I am more than okay with a series that builds upon the previous books to understand it, but without bringing new readers up to speed, this one is strictly for those who’ve read the entire series. For me, unfortunately there was too much unexplained information and too many names to really enjoy this book.
