Cover Art Coverage

Some absolutely *gorgeous* cover art this week, I’m loving the use of light and color.  I had to stare long and hard before I could chose just one Best, Kiersten White’s MIND GAMES, Amanda Hocking’s LULLABY, and Kevin J. Anderson’s DEATH WARMED OVER were all in the running.  Interestingly enough, none of those choices made it to the top of Abigail or Kristina’s list, which would you choose?

For a moment, a face flashed before my eyes — the most hideous face I’d ever seen. No matter how hard I tried to forget what had happened, I saw him everywhere I went. It was Loki — the evil god that I’d helped set free against my will.

I should have known that my first official date with Logan Quinn was destined to end in disaster. If we’d gotten into a swordfight, or been ambushed by Reapers, I’d have been more prepared. But getting arrested mid-sip at the local coffee hangout? I didn’t see that one coming. I’ve been accused of purposely helping the Reapers free Loki from his prison — and the person leading the charge against me is Linus Quinn, Logan’s dad. The worst part is that pretty much everyone at Mythos Academy thinks I’m guilty. If I’m going to get out of this mess alive, I’ll have to do it myself …

Is this a new model? I do like the dragon in the back, but overall this feels homemade compared to the previous covers. The purple and red are working for me on this cover, though the individual elements (like the necklace and dragon) don’t look very well integrated, too crisp and Photoshopped. I like it. The purple eyes are cool and I like the dragon in the corner.

In a world where psychics and mind-readers are the ultimate tools in corporate espionage, two teen girls try to save themselves and their future.

“Guys, I can’t even. I love that the girl is overlaid with all of these images–unsettling images–that put together a picture of her. I love that half of her face is in shadow. I love that she is looking straight at the reader in an almost challenging way. I love that it’s a beautiful cover, but also slightly off, slightly disturbing once you look closer. I love the colors. I love the font.  I LOVE IT ALL.”-Author’s Comments

Very cool. Spend some time with the large image to really appreciate all the tiny composite images. Absolutely gorgeous colors and composition, I love how her eye and lips bracket the title. That’s neat how they put the composite of the small images over the girl’s face.

Those yellow feathers really pop, don’t they? I believe this is a James Porto photo again (he did the 1st cover and the Hush Hush covers if you didn’t know). Love the rich pairing of pink and blue, and how the title flourish compliments wind blowing over this model.  Really well done. I like how the continuation of the water theme gives a summer-y feel to the series. I want to know more about the yellow feathers…

This cover is well done, but it freaks me out. Things that swarm freak me out on principle, but with the syringe…too much for me. I like this striking image, but don’t see a paranormal tie in at all.  This cover could be a thriller of any kind. I like the effect of the syringe inside of the insect forming its backbone. I think its a bee on closer inspection.

Love the idea that this is a negative of the first volume. Plus I’m still a fan of the girl in a pretty dress trend. Such a striking compliment to the first omnibus cover, I love the reflection of black and white. Pretty girl in a dress theme is wonderful. Love the black dress on white background contrast.

His steampunk gun looks so cool with the gear details. Click to see it the large image. I love me a billowing duster, this is a great cover to combine steampunk and vampires.  I’m not sure about this shade of orange, but I’ll be it looks good in person. Awesome touch with the cool looking ‘gear gun’. He is definately not someone I want to be on the bad side of.

As Kaleigha from Wicked Scribes pointed out, somebody overdid the cropping, but the blue lighting and glow on his eyes are really fitting the title. I like the use of turquoise on the contours and in his eyes, but other than that this cover is rather blah. I’m a fan of bright glowing eyes on covers. The blue light and cover makes his eyes pop even more.

Now this is a new idea I could get behind as an alternative to headless models on covers. Still can’t really see her face, which I know is the goal, but we still get a full image. This is my favorite from the series so far. Another color based cover, but this one is my favorite yet.  The yellow looks natural and integrates well with the image. I like the gun being aimed directly out to us. Kind of gives the cover even more of a badass vibe.

While the ton dances and gossips, another kind of society altogether claims the London night as its own. By the light of the moon, three noble vampires entrusted with the protection of their kind will discover that human desire is far from lost to them—and that love may be the only thing they long for more than life everlasting . . .

Desire Has Never Been So Dangerous

Seduced and cast aside by a rogue, Jocelyn Kingly survived the shameful scandal with her pride intact, as well as a new determination to save women less fortunate than she was. Her mission is aided by a well- intentioned vicar named Amadeus Fallow, whose sservices prove invaluable. Despite the fact that his presence on occasion makes her skin crawl with unease, his assistance is far preferable to the attentions of charming Lucien Valin.

Rakish and self-indulgent, Lucien is exactly the sort of man she detests, even though her overwhelming attraction proves impossible to deny. But when the local brothels are terrorized by a plague of vicious murders, Jocelyn discovers that there is more to both Amadeus and Lucien than she ever imagined—and that a mysterious amulet in her possession is at the core of their dark, unearthly secrets. Can she trust the man who claims to be her friend—or will she surrender to the man who longs to be her lover?

This is a re-release w/ a new cover. Not loving it. I’m getting a Benjamin Button vibe from this guy and his expression looks more confused than anything else. I could swear we’ve seen this couple before, the man’s face looks very familiar.  Can anyone name the cover?  Above and beyond that, the yellow doesn’t look good with the red badge. I am confused on their positioning. It looks awkward. That probably explains his confused expression. He doesn’t know what’s going on either.

Ever since The Big Uneasy unleashed vampires, werewolves, and other undead denizens on the world, it’s been hell being a detective—especially for zombie P.I. Dan Chambeaux. Taking on the creepiest of cases in the Unnatural Quarter with a human lawyer for a partner and a ghost for a girlfriend, Chambeaux redefines “dead on arrival.” But just because he was murdered doesn’t mean he’d leave his clients in the lurch. Besides, zombies are so good at lurching.
Now he’s back from the dead and back in business—with a case load that’s downright unnatural. A resurrected mummy is suing the museum that put him on display. Two witches, victims of a curse gone terribly wrong, seek restitution from a publisher for not using “spell check” on its magical tomes. And he’s got to figure out a very personal question—Who killed him?

For Dan Chambeaux, it’s all in a day’s work. (Still, does *everybody* have to call him “Shamble”?) Funny, fresh, and irresistible, this cadaverous caper puts the P.I. in R.I.P….with a vengeance.

I’m digging the playful comic book style to these covers. Lots of fun details to find too (the the witch hat wearing pig). Gorgeous use of light, I love the yellow on his shoulders and the shadow on his face.  His skin looks more like the Tinman than a zombie, but I love his smile. Cool graphic novel style. Never heard of a zombie detective but that hole in his head is distracting. Love seeing Dracula having drinks with the Mummy (I think its the Mummy) in the background.

I feel like I’ve seen this multiple times before. Not loving the pink and lime colors either. The pairing of bright pink and blue don’t work as well for me here, as the green and white make the whole cover too bright for my tastes. Ah the tiny mid drift shirt combined with the booty shot! Rating it down mainly for the ridiculous shirt. It is so not covering enough up front I bet.

He looks like he’s waiting for a bus…Nothing about this makes it stand out. The last of the new covers to be revealed for this series. No where near as cool as this optical illusion on the original, but I do like that they went with the axe for the Red Riding Hood story. I went back and forth on this one..I kind of love it, but I don’t know how I feel about the B&W only on the guy. It gives him a Lon Chaney Wolf Man look. I know what you mean. I haven’t read most of the paranormal/dystopian YA that’s been coming out, but that cover changed my mind. Definitely TBR.

  1. Amy

I like the Mind Games cover because I think the tiny almost transparent images and the full image really matches the title of the book. The Soul Screamers covert art is really nice too. Daughter of the Sword’s cover art also matches it’s title a lot because it reminds me of a scene from all those Asian gangster movies I watched.

    • Julia

Excellent breakdown of your favorites, Amy, thanks for sharing!

  2. Susannah Sandlin

Enjoyed your breakdown. For whatever it’s worth, that cover for ABSOLUTION is a placeholder the publisher stuck on Amazon and has not been finalized. Doubt it will change enough to change your minds though :-)
