Cover Art Coverage

It’s always interesting when a series gets a cover redesign, though even the most appealing new covers may leave readers nostalgic for their old familiar favorites.  Though the cover reveal for Jana Oliver’s FORETOLD is ominous and beautifully executed, both Abigail and I miss the good old days of sneakers and bright colors.  On the other hand, Tahereh Mafi’s SHATTER ME has an over the top gorgeous new cover that completely changes my sense of the series, and has landed it on my TBR list.  What are some of your favorite redesigns?  And when has a new style left you cold?

Nothing is going to top the first cover, but this is my 2nd favorite. Very romantic but with the promise of heartbreak. Gorgeous lighting, tension, and abs. Still can’t beat the drama of HUSH, HUSH, but this is my second favorite in the series. This cover is so romantic and
fitting for a finale to the Hush Hush series.

This one is a little too off center. The models are barely on the cover. I like the lighting on their skin and his wings, though with the sun behind them I’m not sure where it’s coming from.  Still, a nice embrace. I like the use of lighting here.  The light hits off the guy’s wing really nicely.

To keep themselves and the humans safe, the Dires need a witch as powerful as Seb, who betrayed the Dires to work for the weretrappers.

They find what they are looking for in Kate, a human who survived a horrible car accident that left her back scarred with a handprint no one else can see. Stray senses Kate’s abilities as a witch and recruits her to help the Dires—all the while knowing she is so powerful they will need to kill her once she helps defeat the weretrappers.

He’s got way too much hair for my taste, but the tat, buckle, bike, and leather jacket are working big time. I’m not a fan of shirtlessness, Photoshopped tattoos, or rain effects, but they’ve done a good job bringing all of these elements together on this cover.  I wish his posture was a little better, but overall ok. That belt buckle seemes to make his outfit or what he is has on at the moment. Also there have been some good tattoo placements on cover models recently and this cover adds to the good tat category. Its the extra touches that makes this cover not as boring as it could be.

Amelia Darcy has no interest in marrying well. Her heart belongs to the sky and the dirigibles of brass and steel that swoop over Victorian England. But when her father, an eccentric inventor, dies, the Darcy siblings are left with scrap metal—and not a penny to their names.

Their only hope to save the family reputation and fortune is to embark on a quest to discover an invention of historical importance in honor of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Armed with only her father’s stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy.

But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the airship of ex–Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry. Tuck agrees to escort Amelia to her destination, but the two are challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction. Soon the pair is dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again.

Clearly the Cover Gods are smiling on me. First I received that awesomelly gorgeous cover redesign for FOOL FOR LOVE. Then yesterday I got the official cover for the launch book in The Glorious Victorious Darcys series–HER SKY COWBOY.  What can I say except…. WAHOO! Oh, and STEAM-A-LICIOUS! – Beth Ciotta

Very cool steampunk details everywhere (love his gun). I wish she was looking off like he was, but that’s a minor complaint. *Update* You can buy the exact skirt! That cowboy is totally working for me, but the lady falls flat.  Hard to look tough when wearing a ruffled mini, she just comes off bratty. I love this cover. Great poses and outfits. The skirt is neat looking.  It kind of reminds me of Firefly with the whole steampunk cowboy feel going on here. Point taken away for no Nathan Fillon. :)

As far as chick-lit style covers go, these are pretty average. It’s a little too white, even for a snow scene. I’m growing fond of that little wolf silhouette, a cute hallmark for the series. Nice continuation of the series covers. I like the wolf in the background of all of the covers.

“What do you think?  I LOVE it. Once again the amazing artist Larry Rostant and Penguin’s art department have outdone themselves. My suggestion for the mood of the cover was something along the lines of: ‘This is the last book in the series. Allie must face the final battle, wage the last war and stand against the imminent apocalypse…’ ” – Devon Monk

The last two covers have been very monochromatic, so I love that they added the bright, fiery oranges. It’s a nice send off for the series. Gorgeous angle, and I love the fire swirling around the sword. Pretty usage of color.  I love seeing a samurai sword on book covers.

No official description, but the water theme comes across perfectly in the cover. I love how her dress looks like ripples of water…or how ripples of water look like her dress. I love the flourish on the “V”, and this image is a gorgeous mix of ripples and gauzy fabric. I also like the water theme and the little swirl on the “V” is a nice touch. The cover looks like it could be a painting with chalks or something.

Yes, it’s very similar to SPIRIT, but at least they used a different shot. I would have preferred a different color like they used for the prequel short, but it does fit perfectly with the rest of the series. I really love how they’ve handled the cover in this series.  Bringing different guys to the forefront and having one in the spotlight for the novellas, both work wonderfully. Nice addition to this series.I like the black spatter background for the title(s).

But on the eve of the ritual, the world that thought he was dead abruptly discovers that he’s still alive, and they would much rather he return to the grave.

Having no other choice, Atticus, his trusted Irish wolfhound, Oberon, and Granuaile travel to the base of Mount Olympus, where the Roman god Bacchus is anxious to take his sworn revenge—but he’ll have to get in line behind an ancient vampire, a band of dark elves, and an old god of mischief, who all seem to have KILL THE DRUID at the top of their to-do lists.

Kristina’s Thoughts

I wasn’t nuts about the previous cover, but Gene has delivered the best cover so far with TRAPPED. I wonder if the romance is a bigger focus in this book since Granuaile is sharing the cover with Atticus…? This is my favorite in the series, mainly because it emphasizes his gorgeous chest and minimizes that scraggly beard. Cool looking. The necklace on Atticus is off center though. I keep wanting to adjust it. I like when Atticus’s face is hidden or in profile better than in some of the covers with him facing the reader. Makes the cover look dynamic in an odd way.

I wish they’s stuck with the initial design from the first 2 covers, but the back view is my favorite of the redesigns. And the white tank is a perfect modern touch. I like the hair blowing across this cover, but I still miss the sneakers of the original series covers. I love the wing(?) design here. Since this is the final book it is fitting that we see her back as the story is ending and she is leaving.

I think this is my favorite Pepper Martin cover. The really have captured the playful yet still spooky tone of these books. Love that her garter is peeking out too. A cute style for this series, I like the splash of green.  A sexy bride in a graveyard?  Consider my interest piqued. Fun cover. That dress is one that I would like to wear.Very flirty.

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting asThe Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices,Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

“gah, guys, it’s ridiculous how much i love this new cover. because it’s so… different.  it’s strange. it’s weird and beautiful and kind of unexpected and highly metaphorical in its representation. it’s basically like the inside of Juliette’s head. in fact, everything about it — every detail — is significant to the story. this cover feels so right to me. i’m crazy, crazy in love with it, and i really hope you guys like it, too!” – Tahereh Mafi

Wow is this fascinating. Her eyelashes are trees, she’s crying a waterfall, and there is a bird in her eye! Trippy but I can’t look away. Wow, this cover gives me an entirely different perspective on SHATTER ME.  Much less generic than the first go round, I love everything about this redesign.  And that tagline is completely swoon-worthy! Nice eyelash trees! I like the effect of the eyeshadow being the sun and sky behind the trees. This is a really creative cover.

The normal part of Lorelei MacAlister’s life didn’t just slip away quietly the day Jared Kovach came to town. Nope. The normal part of her life shattered. It exploded. It burst into a gazillion shards of fleeting light.

Oh, and the fact that she has a crush on the Angel of Death. But what a beautiful death it is. If those weren’t bad enough, something sinister has come to town and it wants nothing more than to hear Lorelei’s dying breath as it strangles it out of her. Thank goodness the gang has a supernatural champion. But what happens when the only being who can save them switches sides midstream? How can a group of misfits capture one of the most powerful beings ever created? And will they find out how to bring Jared back to them before it’s too late?

Pretty enough and matches the debut…but this is the exact same image as on the cover of A WANT SO WICKED by Suzanne Young. That makes it really close to a thumbs down for me. The drama of the top image looks silly next to the mundane row of desks across the bottom, this one doesn’t work as well as book one. Good continuation of the school theme. Will the third be the cafeteria or maybe the gym?
