Cover Art Coverage: 17 New Titles!

May 1, 2012 Cover Art Coverage 18

This week Abigail and I have the opposite of a “perfect game” going on.  There are many titles that received unanimous approval, but we also have a perfect record of asynchronous thumbs down going on.  Not one title got two thumbs down this week. In a few instances, we mentioned the exact same detail and then went our separate ways (my favorite is the battle axe rock star).  Feel free to chime in an help us break all these ties.

There’s no way sixteen year old Quincy Amarante will become the fifth grim reaper. None. Not over her shiny blue Mustang. Her Jimmy Choos. Or her dead body.

She’s supposed to enjoy her sophomore year, not learn about some freaky future Destiny says she has no choice but to fulfill.

It doesn’t take long for Quincy to realize the only way out of the game is to play along especially since Death can find her anyway, anywhere, anytime. And does.

Like when she’s reassuring her friends she wants nothing to do with former best friend Ben Moorland, who’s returned from god-knows-where, and fails. Miserably. More…

I almost love this. The HS setting is nicely conveyed, and the font works, but it’s lacking another element to tie everything together.

I like the staging of the models (the seated background drawing the eye to the standing center with a scythe).  The white will probably stand out on the stage, too.

“I’m so excited! I hope you guys love this cover as much as I do. I adore everything about it.”

This is so much better than the early leaked concept. Fits nicely with the more rural setting for this book.

I love this cover, a perfect “above ground” compliment to ENCLAVE.  I don’t know if this would catch my eye out of context, but with Aguirre’s name and my love for this series guarantee that I was watching for it.

This feels like a Gene Mollica cover. Either way, it a new favorite for the series. The first to feature a couple and I think it totally pulls off the fierce and sexy vibe.

I like the variety in this series, featuring a couple is a nice change of pace.  But why are the women the only ones who get a full face?

I really like the subtle magical details like the little sparkles and the faintly glowing tattoo. Plus there is something very tender about the pose that I’m really connecting with.

A lapsed Wiccan that doesn’t believe in magic anymore… that’s definitely one I’ve never heard before.  I love the expression on this guy’s face.

Yes, this is almost a generic shirtless PNR cover, but he looks like a rock star the way he’s holding his battleaxe. That totally saves it for me.

I keep seeing a guitar instead of an axe… which helps distract from the whole hair situation.  Wolverine stubble is
usually a win, but for some reason that torc with the dark stubble patch with the dark brows… it’s a little too much.

I don’t understand his look at all…he’s got the torso of a ken doll with weird color smears on his chest and an odd glowy outline…not a fan.

I’m usually not a fan of matchey-matchey eyes, but these look like they’re meant to be creepy.  I love the camouflage across his chest, very psychedelic.

Nice and gritty. Love the smoking gun. Series best so far.

I like the violet wash on this one, subtle on the individual cover but enough to establish the color compared to the series.  The look on the cover model’s face is gorgeous, too.

*Update* Will Staehle is a genius, designing two covers in one – up close, it’s superheroes, but as you get further away it becomes a giant number 7. It’s amazing, a cover that changes and works perfectly whether big or small. I’m completely over the moon. My first thought when I saw this was superheroes. Which is exactly what this is about. Well done.

I love how the color on this cover is layered, just like a comic book.  The silhouette flying over the sun is gorgeous, and I love how “7” is worked into the sky.

I don’t think the spider’s web and white tiger really work here even though both are in the story, but for short story cover, it’s decent.

I’ve liked the homemade covers made by team Andrews in the past (and I’m not sure who made this one), but this cover is too busy.  Dali isn’t a ghost, and that great creepy house is buried under a spectral tiger, penguin, title, spider web… but I’m still going to buy this.  I have MAGIC DREAMS already, but I need that GUNMETAL MAGIC excerpt *squeeeee*

“One of the great joys of this series for us has been seeing Chris’s take on all 3 covers. We’ve been very fortunate to have his powerful and beautiful art represent our books.”

Hands down my favorite from the series. How fierce does Adele look? *Sigh* I am unabashedly a Chris McGrath fan girl. I’m listening to James Marsters (aka Spike) read bk 1 right now & falling in love with this series all over again.

All hail McGrath!  I love how this cover looks like the first two had a baby.  The couple from book one with the warm colors of book two, culminating in the gorgeous intensity of book three.

When two beautiful teenage stage magicians in World War II England meet a pair of handsome men who can do real magic, sparks fly. But is it illusion, or delusion? Opening-night jitters are nothing new for Phil and Fee Albion, who come from a long line of stage illusionists. Phil, always the passionate one, discovers a hidden college of real magicians led by the devastatingly handsome Arden. If only Phil can persuade these unworldly magicians to help England win the war! It’s hard to tell if the semi blurred look is intentional or not. I like the overall design very much since it really captures that vintage/magic feel. I’m just not sure about the girls. They don’t look at all like teenagers to me. It’s close, but I’m going with thumbs up.

I like how this is staged as an old photograph, but the collagen pouts don’t work for either lady.  The description sounds good, though.

When I saw the new Lord of the Deliverance cover floating around I was hoping, even praying that it was someone's fanart or something. It is sooooo different from the other. No same layout at all. It looks like they went with a different look in the middle of the series and I don't like that. I hate it when they do that. :/

  2. Leeanna

Wow, this is a really neat feature! I'm new here, but I'll definitely be looking for this every time it's up.

I LOVE the cover for The Kingmakers.

  3. Rain Maiden

Love the Kingmakers cover the best. There was a fair share of half naked men this week. Thanks for the post guys, love it!

  4. BJ Kenney

The Lost Prince was a letdown for me too. I love the Iron Fey covers and was really looking forward to seeing another, but alas it's just mediocre for me.

  5. twilightdew

I think my favorite cover would have to be FURY’S KISS. I really like the violet tone and the font is great. If I saw this at Barnes and Noble it would definitely catch my eye.

  6. Abigail

Welcome! We do these posts every Wed & then we also have a Global Edition that goes up once or twice a month too :)

  7. Larissa Ione

Heh…okay, the comment about the Rogue Rider cover being undone? Accurate! *g* That actually isn't the final cover. That's a mockup that was put up on Amazon as a placeholder. The new cover will keep the lightness (which makes me happy!) but the rest of the cover is supposed to be completely different.

  8. Larissa Ione

Mariya, you'll be happy to know that it isn't the official cover! :) The official one will retain the light color (supposedly,) which I like. I think with the pearlized overlay it'll be gorgeous. But the rest of the cover is supposed to change. This was just a mockup. I'm hoping to be able to reveal the final cover in the next couple of weeks. Yay!

  9. Abigail

Thanks so much for letting us know! We'll be sure to up the final cover when it's released.

  10. Larissa Ione

By the way, I LOVE the Outpost cover! I'd buy the book for the cover alone, but it helps that I love the series! :)

  11. Julia

Sorry we jumped the gun (but I'm excited we get to do *another* reveal when the final cover is available). I loved the white, it's going to be even more striking with a pearlized overlay. I'll be sorry to lose that intense about-to-kiss expression (anyone else getting that Jack Kelly at the end of Newsies vibe?), but I can't wait to see the final!

  12. Julia

In my imagination, the white is gorgeous rough paper with the red laying on it like calligraphy ink. Definitely more gravitas than the prior cover, completely different feel.

  13. Julia

I'm way behind on this series, I've only read the novella in ON THE PROWL. This cover made me want to catch up.

  14. Abigail

Julia you are totally right about Jack! I completely missed that but now it's all I can see. I still swoon every time I watch that movie.

  15. Larissa Ione

Oh, no – please don't apologize! There was no way you could have known. I'm thrilled to have it included in the post, whether it's final or not! :) It's possible, if the cover loses that particular couple's pose, it could go up inside or on the back or something. I'm DYING to see the new one. I love cover art day!

  16. Mariya

*heart attack* HAHAHA! THANK GOD! Thank you soooooo much for clarifying that Larissa! The cover scared me for a moment there! I can't wait to see the final version!!! Very excited! ;))
