Review: Dark Kiss by Michelle Rowen

Review: Dark Kiss by Michelle Rowen

May 29, 2012 Review 4 ★★★

I have often used the words “world-building” and “mythology” interchangeably to mean the magic an author brings to their book. In DARK KISS, however, Rowen’s magic is definitively mythology, as her angels and demons inhabit a city that is almost featureless. Other than a school filled with between-class-hallways and a club where Samantha encounters the paranormal for the first time, this book takes place entirely in the characters’ conversations.

Early Review: Blue-Blooded Vamp by Jaye Wells

Early Review: Blue-Blooded Vamp by Jaye Wells

May 27, 2012 Review 2 ★★★★

The conclusion to Jaye Wells’ Sabina Kane urban fantasy series; BLUE BLOODED VAMP was in a word; epic. This book was jam packed with complex characters, thrilling action, and startling realizations about Sabina and her heritage. I think just about every character from past books got at least a mention if not a small cameo which was nice as it felt like a kind of final curtain call. What I really enjoyed most about this book was that it constantly moved (we even begin the book on a moving train) towards a huge finale involving an intense confrontation with Cain, the father of vampires.

Review: The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

Review: The Peculiars by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

May 26, 2012 Review 3 ★★

THE PECULIARS was a book of great potential that offered alternate history, fantastical creatures, and technology. The heroine’s core was unique and well-written, from her own insecurities to her very real physical differences. The racist and colonialist attitudes of citizens towards the Peculiars of Scree made for a compelling frame around McQuerry’s steampunk fantasy, but predictable character behaviors and a disappointing ending overwhelmed my initial excitement about this book.

Review: Beauty by Laurell K. Hamilton

Review: Beauty by Laurell K. Hamilton

May 24, 2012 Review 3 ★★

It’s been a long time since the Anita Blake series and I have been on the same page. Once the subject of many, many re-reads, the world of Anita and her boys have fallen by the wayside as of late (though Merry Gentry still gets re-reads every few years). The series’ later books have become largely internal, both in terms of the pedantic dialogue explaining the world according to Anita and the disappearance of the mundane world. I’ve heard HIT LIST is a return to police work, but I’m not entirely convinced that wouldn’t just find OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY repackaged (How many times have we read Anita facing off with a local cop that thinks she’s either A. just a pretty face B. a vamp whore or C. a witch. Mayhem ensures). Still, it is on my TBR list for when I can get my hands on a copy, and after reading the excerpt following BEAUTY, KISS THE DEAD lands on that list as well.
