I kinda don’t know what to make of this series since the covers are all over the place. From cutesy to this one that hints at erotic elements. On it’s own, I’m not loving this. It needs something to make it look more finished.

A big departure from the first book in this series, but neither one grabs me.  These cover elements are too crisp to be alluring, and the shear fabric over her curves doesn’t look quite right.

What could be scarier than the first day of school? How about An Apple for the Creature, an all-new anthology from the editors of Home Improvement: Undead Edition? Your worst school nightmares—taking that math test you never studied for, finding yourself naked in school

for her nephew’s entire kindergarten class but finds she’s one short when a deranged gunma

The apple is perfect. Another anthology from Charlaine & Toni that boasts a stellar lineup and a cute cover. Definitely going on my Wish List

As much as I love the skull/apple, the mash up of Sookie-esque folk art doesn’t look quite right on this cover.  The yellow outline of the title tips me over to a thumbs down.  Wish there was a hint of what Ilona Andrews is contributing, her name moved this straight to my TBR list.

Be your own hero . . .

Set in London at the turn of the last century, the novel follows the stories of three intelligent and very talented young women, all of whom are assistants to very powerful men: Cora, lab assistant to a member of parliament; Michiko, Japanese fight assistant to a martial arts guru; and Nellie, a magician’s assistant. The three young women’s lives become inexorably intertwined after a chance meeting at a ball that ends with the discovery of a murdered mystery man.

It’s up to these three, in their own charming but bold way, to solve the murder—and the crimes they believe may be connected to it‐‐without calling too much attention to themselves. More…

Sounds awesome and looks cool, but it looks so much like a poster for the movie Sucker Punch…not sure how I feel about that.

There is something about these three that has completely won me over, this cover is fun and exciting.  It looks like a caper waiting to happen!

Make sure you enlarge this cover to really see all the details (tiny skulls and bones in the border, the card suits on each side etc). The cover is perfect for the title. It says Alice w/out the title, but with a hint of macabre…very cool.

Hahaha, I love the expression on this model’s face as she stares up at the book title.  “I’m where?!” Completely didn’t expect Showalter’s name, either, I’m excited about this one.

A bit of a departure from the previous two covers, but still fairly nondescript.

Thumbs up on this one, but a very different look and feel than the prior two covers.  I like this sword/vibe better, but it’s a confusion switch.

These are such pretty covers. This one has a warmth that contrasts nicely with the cool tones of the previous covers. Really like this.

The warmest of this series, this cover really works for me.  I love her curls, and how the light makes the clouds give the impression of wings.

This has that elusive ethereal quality that I’m always drawn to. Her dress looks like it’s made out of moss and fireflies…

Eeek, talk about fragile, the angle and cover model
’s posture is totally vulnerable.  This cover is a bit step up for the series (in terms of emotional punch), I love it.

All the while, alarmed by her urges, she must do everything in her power to suppress her growing thirst for human blood.

I wouldn’t mind a hint of fang or some other visual clue to indicate this book is about vampires as well as being steampunk, but I still really like it. It feels like maybe a Tony Mauro cover but I couldn’t confirm that. The colors are rich and gorgeous.

Love the sass and the curls, all the red fits the description and really makes the cover model pop.  Can someone help jog my memory?  This reminds me of another steampunk cover, with a similar title flourish and staging, but I can’t remember.

Not quite as cheeky as the first
cover (which I liked), but bright
color palette is still working for
me.

As much as Iike the design for this series, I don’t like the choice of yellow for accent.  The model’s face isn’t as engaging (looking for tension?), which means I only like this one in relation to book 1.

These covers are really showpieces for artist Nekro. The first is still my favorite, but all are gorgeous. I could literally stare at this for hours.

Such an eye-catching series, and each one can stand on it’s own two feet.  Very exotic and trippy, love these cover.

UP – Gene did the omnibus for Saintcrow’s Dante Valentine collection too, so I’m glad to see Orbit snagged him for this one as well. I was never a fan of the original covers for this series, so I’m really glad they went with a very UF feel for the omnibus (which looks very similar to the German cover of book one.

As much as I liked the flirty shadows of the individual books, I think Mollica has done a gorgeous job on the omnibus.  Love the silver in her hair.

Not as eye catching as debut, but I like that they went for slightly unsettling instead of pretty…any guesses on what’s in her hair?

No where near as striking as the cover for book one, BAD TASTE IN BOYS was a visual pun that I couldn’t resist.  This one is just dark (though I like the title font).

The composition is nice, and the muted colors effectively create a feeling of cold/winter, but it does have that slightly homemade feel.  More shadowing etc. would have helped all the elements feel more cohesive.

That goblin king looks pretty out of place in the background, why is he in a trench coat while Greta wields a broadsword and furs?

The covers for this series go really well together and are instantly recognizable as the Demons Unleased series, always great IMO. Book 2 is still my fav, but this one is a solid follow up.

I’m a little torn here as I like 90% of this cover: the shadowed scarlet against the crisp white and black, the ivy curly around the edges, even her running. But there is something distractingly  off about her face, like somebody goofed in photoshop and aged her fifty years.

This image may be artificially grainy on our copy, but I’m not a fan.  The cover model looks like the Blair Witch version of a YA-dress cover.  Not a fan.

Julia – personally I thought that the cover of Incarnation looks similar to The Iron Wrym Affair by Lilith Saint Crow. Is that what you where thinking of?

  6. Bec McMaster

Ooh, I may be biased (steampunk, yay!) but Incarnation looks awesome. And the Friday Society. Big week in covers. My poor TBR just groaned, I
    'm sure of it.

I'm going with Abigail's pick for best – Out For Blood. Nekro is absolutely amazing!!

And Julia is soooo right on with Covet for worst. Ewwwww…
