Cover Art Coverage: 10 New Covers!

April 4, 2012 Cover Art Coverage 12

So excited to be back from vacation and find that Abigail has refreshed the look of Cover Art Coverage.  She’s the graphical guru here on the blog, and I don’t know about you, but I love the new look.  While we agree on the blog’s look, we disagree a few times on the covers this week.  Abigail is all thumbs up whereas I have a few thumbs down.  We’re in complete agreement about the Best this week, however, as the stunning WILLFUL IMPROPRIETY anthology blew us both away.  I’m a tough sell when it comes to short stories, but this cover alone has added WILLFUL IMPROPRIETY to my TBR list, can’t wait!

How do they keep making each cover better than the last one? I can’t figure it out, but it’s all good.

There is something about his pose that is striking me a little feminine…but I do appreciate the sunset colors and beach setting. These covers really do emphasis the setting which I love.

Love the beach scene, I can’t think of any other way to work this kind of warm, purple color scheme into  a cover.  I don’t like the cover model’s hair/profile, but he’s pretty shadowed.

This is so soft and lovely. The colors, the wings, her pose…really beautiful. I like this even more than the debut.

Gorgeous and feminine, I’d kill to look this delicate in this dress.  Her wings are a little small, but the lighting on her dress and the colors behind her are perfect.

Love the way the cover looks like a sheet of ice was covering it but got smashed. Plus this cover is a nice compliment to the newest FEVER covers. Wow I want this so bad…Anyone from Delacorte Press reading this?

Maybe this is one of those covers where the foil in person makes a difference, but this is too oddly layered for my tastes.  Very disappointing, as I’m so excited to read this one.

I’m so excited!  I’m deviating from the usual Favorite Quote Fridaytoday so I can bring you the cover of Phantom ShadowsWoohoo!

Soooo much better than the previous cover. I’m still not nuts about the overall style for this series (when is a just a vest a good look?), but I’m seeing improvement so it gets a thumbs up. Would love to see something like Gena Showalter or Kresley Cole style covers here.

I think the image quality is contributing to an overly airbrushed quality, but even crisp this cover is pretty non-descript.  All of these covers are more contemporary romance than urban fantasy.

I’ll be honest. My first response was a Scooby-Doo uh-wuh? I’d grown very attached to my creepy-weird, gender neutral original cover. The new look felt . . . whoa, wait a second. I LIKED being creepy-weird, you know? But I DO remember that when I first that original cover, I’d been a little concerned about the lack of color.

I couldn’t get past the awful cover for ASHES, so I’m thrilled to see that they completely chucked the concept for the sequel (and the paperback release of ASHES). The vertical text and the swirling/smoking blue colors are very cool.

The paperback covers are definitely less creepy than the first ASHES cover art, but I don’t think this is too “Scooby-Doo bright”.  A cool new look for the series.

There’s a fun little red ridding hood vibe here…and the steampunk elements are coming through loud and clear. And yes, Paul Marron is making his near weekly appearance, always a plus.

I like how the cobblestones compliment her fishnets.

Chris McGrath is always creating great covers (especially for this series), but I can’t help but wish Toby was doing something or holding something. She’s just standing there.

Is that magic or a tsunami in the background?  McGrath has done such an awesome job pulling in elements of the story with these covers, I always study each one for hints of what is to come.  Can’t wait for this!

This cover just gets prettier the bigger you make it. The colors are beautifully prismatic and the way her hair blows back into sparks from a sparkler is just lovely.

Bright, pretty standard YA, but I love the sparks that hint at wings.

Very cool. McGrath is the man. Love how he captured the ‘glyph looking like circuitry’ on her arm. She looks like a character I want to read about (and sounds like one too from the description).

Definite McGrath, I love how he’s made Tara is such a distinct character right from the get go.  Her glowing forearm is a particularly cool touch.

Description:

A beguiling collection of original short romances for teen readers set in the Victorian era. The Victorian era is significant for the rise of the middle classes and marked changes in social relationships, both in the home and in wider society, with the proliferation of domestic help and the development of increasingly rigid gender roles.

These are romances that chafe against the restrictions of the period, with heroes and heroines who defy social convention, igniting firestorms of gossip. The aristocrats, impostors, social climbers, domestic workers and undercover agents of these stories exist in an authentically lush world, depicted here with telling attention to detail. More…

The font is very cool which is crucial in covers like this. Not loving the florescent green/blue colors nearly as much as the black/red from the debut, but I do get the magic vibe that I was hoping for.

These covers just try not to detract fro
m the star power of Evanovich’s name, and it works!  I love the green title, it reminds me of all the witches I’ve loved before.

Wow, there are some really stunning covers this week! I love the cover for Willful Impropriety as well as the Stephanie Chong cover. Too much wonderful cover art to pick a favorite!

  2. Tiffany Mahaffy

I really liked A Shimmer of Angels. I am all love for the clolourful!! I love these post that you put up!! Thanks for another great one :)

  3. Stephsco

The Ashes covers have improved; Shadows has a bit of a Scooby vibe like you said, but it fits the story. The first cover was creepy and didn't really fit the vibe of the character.

  4. Julia

I haven't read these, I appreciate getting a more informed opinion. As much as I liked the creep-factor, I can see how it would be a barrier to entry for new readers. The new covers look much more accessible.

  5. Bec McMaster
