Hi All! Julia’s taking another much needed week off from the Cover Art Coverage post (there have been scads of cover reveals lately and this is a time consuming post to put together each week). Several great covers to gush over this week including a new one from artist Gene Mollica that get’s my Best pick, as well as a very promising new series from Anton Strout. And it seems that no week is complete without a disappointing PNR cover and Julia and I agree on below. Let us know which ones you love and hate in the comments or via Twitter @Abigail_ATUF

As someone generally unfamiliar with the Love at Stake series, WANTED: UNDEAD OR ALIVE started off very slowly for me. The first several chapters were a crash course in vampire politics, and “Queen Corky” is not the type of villain that could keep my attention. Phineas was up to his neck in some ridiculous reality T.V. plot to find Corky, and it was not until he and Brynley get some face time that the story picked up.
Love in a post-apocalyptic world is a concept that draws me in, and the description of TOMORROW LAND conjured up the thrills and dangers of ENCLAVE and AFTERTIME. Unfortunately, in TOMORROW LAND, that seed of an interesting story was buried under a clunky narrative device, melodramatic plotting, and characters that never rose above caricature. Though young readers may enjoy the concept without realizing that anything is missing, the decadent attitudes portrayed by Mancusi’s future teens aren’t particularly YA appropriate. Perhaps smiting all the sexually active people was supposed to redeem this fact (as per horror movie rules), but that device had me rolling my eyes.
Though SPELLCASTER was the first book I’ve read in this series, it will definitely not be my last. Not even my last this week, as I already have book one queued up to enjoy. SPELLCASTER contained enough backstory that I never felt lost, but after seeing how well Shultz handled Emma and Brendan’s transition to “happy couple”, I’m excited to read all the details about their courtship in SPELLBOUND.

As a paranormal romance, DEADLY IS THE KISS made me terribly nostalgic. Despite the gloss of vampires and otherworldly politics, this book is an brand of novel that I haven’t read in while. With the merest fringe of plot, the hero and heroine conjure up trope after trope as they sex their way to happily ever after. Unfortunately, none of the many plot devices that were presented were in a new or clever incarnation and the characters themselves were not any brand of archetype that I found appealing, leaving me finishing DEADLY IS THE KISS with a shrug and a sigh.
