Guest Blog & Giveaway: Why Aliens Are Better Than Vampires by Jennifer L. Armentrout & win OBSIDIAN

February 19, 2012 Giveaways, Guests 54

We’re happy to welcome back Jennifer L. Armentrout to the blog just days before the release of her Lux series prequel, SHADOWS (available on February 21st from Entangled Publishing). If you are new to the Lux series, check out Julia’s swooning review of the first book, OBSIDIAN and it’s ultimate bad boy hero Daemon. SHADOWS features a brand new bad boy to fall for: Daemon’s twin brother Dawson.  If you are thinking these otherworldly alphas are vampires, think again.  One look at the description and my former obsession with Jason Behr from Roswell came back with a vengeance.  Want to find out for yourself?  Check out the giveaway below where three of you will win a copy of the first Lux novel, OBSIDIAN!

Why are aliens better than vampires, weres, and other creatures that go bump in the night?

by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Like any lover of the paranormal genre, I love me some vamps, shifters, and other spooky supernatural creatures, but sometimes people forget that aliens are really just another ‘otherworldly’ creature and not just for the sci-fi lovers out there, but also the paranormal ones.  So here is my list to why (completely bias) aliens are better than normal supernatural creatures:

Obsidian (Lux, #1)Onyx (Lux, #2)

  1. Aliens aren’t in every book you read. There’s something fresh and new about them.
  2. Aliens can have a whole array of extraordinary abilities not limited to what you already know due to existing myths. Aliens can pretty much do anything you want.
  3. Aliens are from outer space, not a cave or woods or Transylvania. How cool is that?
  4. Aliens, at least mine, can be extremely beautiful to see in their “true” skin. Something exotic and definitely not of this world.
  5. Aliens are probably going to be way more intelligent than us. So the villains are bigger and badder. Smarter. Also, when you’re dealing with an alien race, enemies are going to be everyone. Not just a rogue shifter eating humans or whatever, but the stakes are high. There’s exposure, government agencies, other aliens, humans freaking out, etc.
  6. And aliens can be sexy, too. Not the giant brain eating bug kind of aliens, but some aliens can give an alpha vamp male a run for his money. *Cough* Daemon. *Cough*

Shadows (Lux, #0.5)

Disclaimer: I love vamps, shifters, weres, angels, gods, etc. I write about them too. Heh.

Description

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

  2. Linda Henderson

They might have different abilities than a vamp or werewolf. The possiblities are greater for different and unique powers.

Aliens wouldn't need to drink blood in order to survive, and they wouldn't be ruled by the lunar cycle. It would be a little refreshing.

  4. Proserpine

Hi! Maybe with some interesting superpowers that vamps or werewolves can't have : like be able to stand the sun, able to fly,… And with alien you can visit different world??? LOL Thanks for this chance!

  5. Sharon

None of those territorial tendencies, can take you to other worlds for vacation :) thanks for the give away.

  6. Jacki C.

I hadn't really thought about aliens being the Alpha hero – could be interesting.

Can you think of a way an alien hero might be better than a vamp/were?

yes an alien can't nessarly die regeneration anyone?

  8. ilona

As a big Science Fiction fan I've always loved me some Aliens :D

Thanks for the giveaway – the books sound good.

An alien hero might be better than a vamp/were hero because he can have all kinds of different powers that we don't know about, and he can be even more dangerous to whatever is threatening our heroine.

  10. LisaILJ

Hmm. I think an alien hero could be better than a Vamp/Ware because in theory he is not dead/need blood to survive, and he also will not change into an animal?

  11. Jasmyn

Vamps and weres have pretty well defined strenghts and weaknesses. An alien could have endless possibilities.

  12. Pamk

I think with aliens the possibilites are limitless. with vamps/weres you are limited in many ways. I love me some aliens. I am adding this to my tbb list.

  13. Rane Aria

they have cool spaceships with lights and like music…oh wait isn't that Close Encounters of the Third Kind..still cool!

  14. Lori @ Romancing the Darkside

I have to admit I never thought of aliens as sexy but you definitely changed my mind with those covers and your reasons! Thanks for the chance to win.

Aliens for the most part don't have many weaknesses like a vampire or werewolf might..I'm sure they have extra special abilities in the bedroom too…LOL

  15. Goldilox

Because an author can give an alien hero/heroine ANY powers and abilities they want to! When authors give vamps and shifters really "out there" powers, we readers get a bit suspicious. But an alien can be from any planet, with any type of society, and ANY abilities!! :)

  16. heather

Well, they are living breathing creatures and they don't turn into a dog sooooo yeah I would count that as better lol!

  17. Na

An alien hero has the element of surprise. Vampires's strengths and weaknesses are common knowledge for the most part, whereas an alien isn't.

  18. Patsy

How can an alien be better than a vamp…. Aliens can come out and play in the sunlight and they are just so darned exotic! As much as I love vampires, I have to say they have nothing on aliens!

  19. natashaisme

Incredibly intelligent. Tend to possess various superpowers. More highly evolved than your garden-variety earthling. Often have the ability to assume human form, making hiding in plain sight considerably easier.
Awesome weaponry, and not afraid to use it…. But check it… wait for it… What about an alien vampire… LOVE IT! The biggest disadvantage that aliens have is they never fight a home game, always someone else's planet…

  20. Enigma75

Hmm…I would think that with alien's, you can give them whatever ability/weapon's you want.

But, who's to say that Vamps/Were's couldn't be descendents of some long ago alien?? ;)

  21. Dusia

To my mind, aliens aren't bound to Earth by any means so they are much more interesting and invincible enemies. Simply don't care if the planet's destroyed since they have their own. And that makes story more interesting!

Moreover, they aren't as typical as werewofves or vampires, I haven't read any paranormal "cosmo-story" yet.

What is it with these widgets? They never open. I KNOW there is a question. And aliens!

    eearhart at cruzio dot com

  23. Rachel V

I like them because they can be anything you want them to be. They aren't as common and i love that. They could go anywhere in space also and take me with them! HaHa!

  24. Erika W.

Doesn't have to be afraid of blood and can help when someone is hurt easier.

  25. Onge

I'm not sure what kind of powers aliens have. It could be anything. They probably don't have to control part of themselves, bloodlust/animal.
    Thanks for the giveaway!!

  26. Edward

Easy, aliens don't have to drink blood and avoid sunlight. They don't have to go furry once every month. And they got technology so advances they can pretty much PWN humans.

  27. Kristin

There are no boundaries with what an alien can do!! Lore has already been established for vamps and weres so it's hard to come up with anything new! Your alien hero and even be an alien vamp/were hybrid!! And besides, they're NOT dead and they're NOT furry ;)
