Being a vampire princess
Everyone’s after Solange Drake, the soon-to-be undead sixteen-year-old who is prophesized to rule the vampire world. Not that she wants to rule. She’d rather be doing ceramics or talking to Kieran Black, the mysterious vampire hunter that keeps showing up.
Luckily, her best friend Lucy is on her side, plus her seven vampire brothers. Together, they must take on a royal court, an anti-vamp league, and rival tribes of the undead, just to make sure Solange survives. By the stroke of midnight, her fate will be sealed, one way or another.
Book 1 in The Drake Chronicles
HEARTS AT STAKE is the first book in The Drake Chronicles featuring a close knit family of vampires. I have to confess that once again my cover snobbery almost caused me to miss out on another great book. I took one look at HEARTS AT STAKE and thought superficial and the model looks like Reba Macintyre, and didn’t even bother to read the description. I know, how shallow am I? Fortunately, the reviews caused me to finally buy a copy and then berate myself further because I loved it.
The book features two protagonists: vampire Solange (no relation to Beyonce) and her human best friend Lucy. Of the two, Lucy was easily my favorite. She was snarky and sarcastic as well as fiercely loyal to the entire Drake family. She ends up falling for one of Solange’s seven gorgeous brothers, Nicholas. The blossoming awareness between these two was sweet and sexy in turn, and I’m hopeful that future books with follow up on their romance.
Solange gets her own love interest in Kieran, a vampire hunter seeking revenge on the Drake family for killing his father. Lots of hostility and misinformed prejudices keep these two fighting their attraction longer than I thought was necessary. Fortunately whichever romance you prefer, the focus never stays on either one too long before jumping back to the other.
As much as I enjoyed the romance in HEARTS AT STAKE, the twist on vampire mythology was equally captivating. There are three types of vampires: The good vampires like the Drake family who don’t kill humans, the Hounds who have two sets of fangs and use magic, and the Hel Blar who are mindless killing monsters with mouths full of fangs and bruised blue skin from gorging on too much blood.
Bottom line, don’t be like me and get hung up on the cover of HEARTS AT STAKE. You’d be missing out on two swoon worthy romances and seven gorgeous vampire brothers too. Add in a cool mythology and a vampire power play to overthrow the current queen and you’ve got a paranormal YA read that will have you smiling through to the last page. And then you’ll be ready to dive into the next newly released Drake novel, Blood Feud.
